The Virtual Boston Marathon of 2020 gets underway today on 4 September, beginning a week-long celebration of the world’s oldest continuously run marathon. But that continuous streak of either 124 years (counted from its inception in 1897) or 102 years (if we begin the streak in 1919, the year after the 1918 Military Relay, which replaced the traditional race in the final year of WWI) will have to begin anew in 2021. Yet, the spirit of the marathon continues despite the pandemic, with each Boston qualifier designing his or her own virtual racecourse. Good luck to all. Here is a little inspiration to help along the way from the archives of the Runners Digest radio show in Boston.
